Symbian to finally receive Microsoft apps

Today a new post at Nokia Conversations they reported that Nokia and Microsoft have announced that Symbian is finally going to receive Microsoft integration in the form of “Microsoft Apps”.

Based on the post the apps are going to become available in the fourth quarter via the on device Software Update app on Symbian Belle devices. This is good news for those planning to buy new Nokia Symbian based mobile devices in the up-coming months, but sound like another waiting game for the masses of Nokia Symbian^3 and Symbian Anna device owners.

The breakdown of FREE apps is as follows:

  • Microsoft® Lync™ 2010 Mobile: for cost efficient IM, presence, audio and web meetings on-the-go.
  • Microsoft® PowerPoint® Broadcast: quick broadcast of presentations directly from PC to mobile.
  • Microsoft® OneNote™: rich note taking with images. Syncs with Microsoft® SkyDrive®.
  • Microsoft® Document Connection: single view to documents stored on mobile, including email attachments as well as documents on Microsoft® SharePoint® 2010 sites.

Following this initial offering, in early 2012 another app will become available in the form of Microsoft OneNote sync with SharePoint (in addition to SkyDrive) as well as adding native Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps.

This is proof of Nokia’s continued investment in the Symbian platform with continued support until at least 2016 according to Nokia officials.

With support for Symbian in the years to come, there’s plenty of time to get used to some of the apps you may be using to take advantage of the new Nokia with Windows Phone smartphones.”
